Tár úr steini in English. Illustrated by Anna V. Gunnarsdóttir.

about the book

Once upon a time there was a small troll boy who lived with his parents in a cave. He often sat at the mouth of the cave and watched the human children and the elves playing in the sunshine. One night he stole away from home to take a look at the ocean and the countries beyond the mountains.

From the book

   - What are you giving me a stone for, daddy? he asked.
   - This is no ordinary stone, his father said. It's a magic stone that I found lying under a big lump of rock on the moor.
   - What does it do? the boy asked.
   - Take good care of it, and I'll tell you tomorrow, his father said.
Early next morning, the father and son walked up to the moor, and the boy kept his new stone in his pocket. They stopped by a strange-looking lump of rock that was standing by itself below a green mountainside with a cliff face at the top, where you could see the mouth of a cave if you looked very carefully. They sat down.
   - This is where i found your stone, his father said.
Then he told him the story of the stone.
